Since my entry into the virtual community of Second Life (TM) in February of 2007, I have met some very interesting people, one of these friends went on to explore the OSGrid – The Open Metaverse and has set up about 13 sims under the name of “Cyberbohemia” which include several art galleries. I started the Dreamrezzer group in Second Life (TM) as a project for manifesting (rezzing) ideas and dreams in the 3D metaverse. These Dreamrezzers on OSGrid have been true to the name creating fantastic area to visit and explore. Learn more about this project at the Dreamrezzer’s Blog. The video below is a first attempt at MACHINIMA process, using my MAHACHAKRA music as the soundtrack.
Here’s a quick look at the “SixthSense” prototype, the wearable gesture interface designed by Pranav Mistry. This device uses a webcam, microphone, mini-projector and smart phone and will eventually be the size of a silver dollar and will radically change the way we interface with technology.
Pranav Mistry is a Research Assistant and PhD candidate at MIT Media Lab. His vision stems from the practical everyday needs of the masses. He has been experimenting with existing devices and finding unique uses for them. His “Sixth Sense” wearable gesture interface is the result of years tinkering with devices, like taking apart a computer mouse he developed an inexpensive controller. He used a webcam (camera) he removed the microphone and using a mini projector he can use a piece of paper as a computer monitor. His gesture recognizing software makes the whole thing work like magic. Pranav is recognized as one of the most important inventors of our time and has offered details of some of this inventions as open source, so that people all over the world can start developing new ways of using technology. I found this interview with Philip Rosedale, founder of Linden Lab and the creator of Second Life™ 3D virtual world. He is asked about the most unusual thing he’s seen in Second Life™, which happened to be a UFO hovering welcome areas. He also comments on making it easier for new users to get their feet wet with the SL experience, integration with other technological platforms and future applications being developed for Second Life™.
The new Opel Ampera Electric Car concept was unveiled recently at the 79th Geneva International Motor Show, March 3 2009. Adam Opel GmbH is a subsidiary of GM in Europe. The car’s exterior design first hit you with the unique macho though guy look on the front headlights. A good start for counteracting motor enthusiast’s weak opinion of electric cars. Boasting zero carbon emissions, the Ampera four-door electric hatchback offers a top speed of 130 Km/hr (80 miles per hour) with a range of 145 kilometers (90miles). It is powered by a 330 volt lithium ion battery and charges within 14 hours by plugging into any home A/C electric outlet.
Apple was awarded their Multi-Touch Technology Patent number 7479949 on Jan. 20, 2009. After the success of the iPhone and iTouch multi-touch screens, they’ve added a new glass Multi-Touch Trackpad on their new Apple MacBook computers, this one button design uses your fingers to control your computer in ways not previously possible.
