Friend Brian just recommended the Freecycle Network™, it’s made up of 4,628 groups with 6,091,000 members across the globe. A grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Check it out!

Most of you may have read about “Project 10 to the 100th” already. It is an invitation to propose your ideas on how you would change the world. Winning entries will be supported by the $10 million dollars Google has committed for this ecological contest. Video below:

The city of Madrid, Spain, and the European Union sponsored a competition to climatically transform an inner-city urban space. The winning entry is called “The Air Trees.” Current TV has provided the video below:

New England solar power company “Konarka” has developed a revolutionary thin flexible photovoltaic film which is printed with a coating using a modified label making machine. The cost will be lower than existing solar cells and it has countless applications. Technology changing the world.

I can’t have an ecological category without mentioning this no fuel – free energy source magnetic motor (patent pending), developed by Australian inventors John Christie and Lou Brits. The model Lutec 1000 is the closest thing I’ve seen to a perpetual motion motor and can produce 24 kilowatts with a simple kickstart using a car battery. This is a major breakthrough for home power generators and they plan to sell for $4000-$5000 dollars.

After living in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, México for ten years (1991-2001) and seeing the urgency for sustainable development in ecologically sensitive areas like Baja, I have still not given up on the idea of building my own earthship and pursuing the almost utopian dream of disconnecting myself from “the grid.”

I just found out that an old friend still living in Los Cabos is zealously working towards providing solar powered products and ecological home alternatives (solar plants, solar cookers and home desalination plants). I am excited to get back into the solar path, I’ve been asked to cover the upcoming “Solar Power International ’08” Conference in San Diego (Oct. 13-16, 2008). You can see feature interviews of last year’s conference HERE. For more information on Earthships, Biotecture Sustainable Independent Buildings visit www.earthship.net
