The U.S.A. produces 12 billion tons of solid waste annually. Brian Appel and his team have built a giant chemistry set in Philadelphia that takes any kind of organic material (anything that contains carbon) and converts it into oil. The process is called Thermal Depolymerization “TDP” and it copies the earth’s natural process for making fuel. They start by shredding the material, mixing it with water, pressure cooking it and then separating the oil from the water.
